Majuro, Marshall Islands - More assistance in the areas of Environment, Governance and Poverty Reduction will be rendered to the Marshallese people with the recent signing of the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) 2008-2012.
The CPAP - an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Marshall Islands and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was developed in close consultation with Government and relevant stakeholders. It looks at responding to development priority issues over the next five years.
Through this action plan, UNDP will provide assistance by building on prior partnership and launching Support to Nitijela, Phase II project. The project will seek to institutionalize and strengthen the Office of the Clerk to Parliament to support Members of Nitijela in their discharge of legislative, oversight and representative functions.
In support of the Millennium Development Goals, UNDP will seek to strengthen the capacity of line ministries to collect and analyze data to monitor progress on achieving the MDGs through the Economic Planning, Policy and Statistics Office (EPPSO) as well as strengthen Government’s capacity in the area of managing Overseas Development Assistance (ODA).
Further to this, in the area of Environment, the Government and UNDP are preparing for the inception of a new project on Sustainable Land Management and are discussing areas where the Government’s capacity could be strengthened for the purposes of mainstreaming Climate Change adaptation into national policies.
