The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through its Inclusive Governance of Natural Resources Project (IGNR) has provided support for the re-establishment and revitalization of Malaita Provincial Youth Council.

The Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs (MWYCFA) and the National Youth Congress (NYC) are actively pursuing the revitalization of Provincial Youth Councils.

With the partnership and support of UNDP, a leadership workshop was held in Auki, Malaita Province from the 6th to the 8th of October 2020, resulting in the election of new Malaita Province Youth Council Executives. Similar workshop was also conducted in the Western Province which resulted in the re-establishment of the Western Province Youth Council.

Young people make up 70 percent of the total population in Solomon Islands, however youth participation and representation in the society, at both the local and national levels are still lacking.

The aim is for the Malaita Province Council to help strengthen youth coordination at the Provincial level to improve participation and involvement rate of young people in discussing issues affecting their lives and development at the rural level.

To utilize young people’s potential as agents of change, requires involving and empowering them in development, policy discussions and ensuring their participation at all levels of the society. UNDP partners with young people, youth organizations, actors from civil society and private sector, government ministries and members of the UN family to promote youth-focused and youth-led development.

With the 2030 Agenda as a guiding thread, UNDP work to advance young people’s participation in civic and political life, their economic empowerment and their role as peace- and resilience-builders.

The revitalization of Malaita Province Youth Council Workshop in Auki was conducted by the MWYCFAF and NYC and supported by the IGNR Project and implemented by UNDP Solomon Islands and UN Women with the financial support of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.
