Honored to be here with you today to mark the launch of this important training, the first session of the Continuing Market Business Education as part of the Markets 4 Change project.
Also happy to celebrate the International Women’s Day, commemorated globally on the 8th of March every year.
International Women's Day
IWD is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
This year’s theme, Empowering Women - Empowering Humanity: Picture It! envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.
BPFA+20 and CSW:
This training also coincides with the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women taking place from 9 to 20 March 2015 in the UN headquarters in New York. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and civil society from all regions of the world, including the delegation from Fiji review and celebrate 20-year’s achievements of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women’s rights, signed by 189 Governments 20 years ago.
While there have been many achievements since then, many serious gaps remain. This is the time to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilize all people to do their part.
The training and the project:
The training taking place here in Tavua/Ba today, Financial First Steps, is the first session of the Continuing Market Business Education under the Markets 4 Change project. There are 5 training topics under the CMBE.
The training aims to support market vendors to strengthen financial knowledge and skills to manage your market business in more efficient and sustainable way, so that you will gain control over your business, livelihoods and increase access to opportunities (OP2.1)
We also expect that this training will increase the social and economic security of women market vendors. (OC2)
We believe it will contribute to creating safe, inclusive and non-discriminatory marketplaces in rural and urban areas of Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, and promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment. (Goal of the project and branding statement)
